Crane fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female crane fly (Tipula maxima), or daddy long legs. Its head is at centre right, with a pair of antennae between its compound eyes (green). Its wings are seen emerging from its humped thorax at upper left and right. Behind these true wings are the crane fly's halteres, club-shaped projections which aid the insect's balance. Magnification: x15 when printed 10cm wide.
