Supernova collapse simulation. Computer model of a supernova explosion from the core collapse of a super-giant star, revealing shock-wave like behaviour. This discovery provides a more detailed understanding of how a collapsing star can eject most of its layers as elements like iron and oxygen into the surrounding universe. The simulation shows the turbulent flow and fluid dynamics during the core collapse. A supernova occurs when a massive star has run out of nuclear fuel, the fusion of which prevents stars collapsing under their own weight. This work is being carried out at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA. The image, published in 2009, is based on simulation data from the GenASiS code.
