Gumboot chiton. Shell plates of the gumboot chiton (Cryptochiton stelleri). Chitons are primitive, slow moving molluscs with shells composed of eight plates that move against each other. These plates are connected to each other and the body with strong muscles. Chitons live in the surf zones of the oceans where they stick to rocks with their strong foot. The gumboot chiton is the largest of the chitons, growing to 36 centimetres and over 2 kilograms. It is found along the shores of the northern Pacific Ocean.
