The race is seen as an opportunity to develop trade links between Glasgow and other communities throughout the world as well as raising Glasgow's international profile as a business and tourist destination. The race started in Oct 2000 and ends in Sept 2001. The Lord Provost and trade delegation met up with the Clipper crew in Havana at a reception held by the Mayor of Havana.
