SAINTS - JULIA Saint Julia, virgin and martyr is said to have been born in Carthage. When the city was taken by Genseric, in 439, she was captured and sold as a slave to a pagan Syrian. Visiting Corsica with his slave, the Syrian attended a pagan ritual which involved the slaughter of bulls. Julia refused to attend the ceremonies, which attracted the attentions of the governor of the island. The governor offered four of his most beautiful female slaves in exchange for Julia, but the merchant refused. Displeased, the governor had her tortured by hanging her on a cross until she died. She is depicted here as a slave, carrying water. Process print, from Alban Butler's The Lives of The Fathers, Martyrs and Other Principles Saints, edition of circa 1928.
