HOROSCOPES - CHARLES I, KING OF ENGLAND Charles was born on 19 November 1600 in Dunfermline Castle, Scotland. According to the biographer, Charles Carlton, Charles I: The Personal Monarch (1995 edn.), p. 1, he was born shortly after midday: for this information, Carlton refers to a horoscope, cast shortly after the birth, and now preserved in the British Library [Sloane 1788 10]. According to the astrologer, John Gadbury, Charles was born at 10:02:35 pm - but this time is based on a rectification, designed to accommodate the rising of the fixed star Cor Leonis on the Ascendant. A correctly cast horoscope for this time shows that Cor Leonis would not have been rising, so I have adjusted the time to accommodate this important degree, requiring a birth-time of 10:31 pm. The progressions for the chart are interesting at the time of his execution, shortly after 02:00 pm on 30 January 1649: for example, on that day, Saturn has progressed to the radical I.C. The chart cast by Gadbury, which appeared in Collectio Geniturarum (1662), is available in the Charles Walker Collection. The chart for Charles published by Alan Leo, at 614 in Notable Nativities, is (typical of this astrologer, and indeed of this collection of horoscopes) hopelessly incorrect.
