GRIMOIRES - MAGIC SYMBOLS - AGLA The Pentagram (left) and the amended Seal of Solomon (right) from an English grimoire of the 16th century. Both forms include the word Agla, but it is the one to the right which displays the four-letter word in the four corners, and thus magically links it with the four directions of space. The Agla is an acronym, derived from the Hebrew phase, Atha gibor leolam Adonai [Thous art mighty for ever, O Lord]. The sacred name of God (Jehovah) is broken into five constituents in the right hand figure, as Te tra grama ton is the Greek name for the four-letter Hebrew name of God, Jehovah. This means that the entire figure is a play on the numbers 1 (the circle), the number 2 (the two triangles from which the Seal of Solomon is constructed), the number 3 (the constituent triangles), the number 4 (the AGLA and the Tetragrammaton proper), the number 5 [the division of the Tetragrammaton) and the number 6 (in the six-pointed star). It is this numerology which probably explains why there is a horizontal line in the bottom of the figure, for this offers seven (the number 7) straight lines in the make up of the figure.
