Maori (New Zealand);18th/19th Century.- Blade of a Tokipoutangata (ceremonial broad bladed axe); used by Maori chiefs to make the first cut on a piece of wood used for the building of a new house.After his death a Maori chief was buried with the handle of the axe; but the blade was given to the new chief.Okains Bay; Maori and Pioneer Museum.
