The image shows a motor cyclist, participating in a drag racing event, spinning the rear tyre of his motor cycle in order to heat the rubber. The heated tyre will provide added traction when the rider is required to leave the starting line. This process also aids the rider by removing any dirt from the tyre which could hinder traction. Often referred to as a burnout, the car or motor-cycle is kept stationary by applying the brakes to the non-powered wheels, whilst allowing the driven or powered wheels to spin by increasing the engine revolutions in first gear. This causes the tyres to heat up and smoke due to friction. Photographed at the Killarney motor racing circuit in Cape Town South Africa.
