Female costume of the reign of Henry IV; 1399-1423. She wears her hair in a fret in the style known as the horned or snail headdress. From the effigy of Lady de Thorpe; Ashwelthorpe Church; Norfolk. Handcolored engraving from 鈥楥ivil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period' drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin; London; Henry Bohn; 1842. The costumes were drawn from tapestries; monumental effigies; illuminated manuscripts and portraits. Charles and Leopold Martin were the sons of the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin (1789-1854).
