Engraving by Dore. The lights echo the mystery lights known as Corpse Candles, or will-o'-the-wisp. The Will o' the Wisp is the most common name given to the mysterious lights that were said to lead travellers from the well-trodden paths into treacherous marshes. The tradition exists with slight variation throughout Britain, the lights often bearing a regional name. Corpse Candles are very mysterious lights that are often seen in churchyards or graveyards. They are somtimes also called Dead Mens Candles, Jack O`lanterns and Fetchlights. The Candles are supposed to presage death. The size of the candle will indicate the age of the victim. The candle lights may be red, blue or white. They can appear near the Earth or up in the air. ?006 TopFoto / Fortean
