Winter's Gibbet and Steng Cross, near Elsdon, Northumberland. Some 214 years ago in the year of 1791 the brutal murder of Elizabeth Crozier took place at the hands of William Winter and the two tinkers, sisters Jane & Eleanor Clark. Winter was hanged in view of Elizabeth's cottage. A socketed base is all that is left of Steng Cross, once it marked the highest point of the medieval drove road from Scotland as it passed over the moors near Elsdon. 固opFoto / Fortean
