A police diver with the Brigade fluviale decided to put on his diving suit and dive into the River Seine to find a lady's handbag that had fallen into the Seine. The handbag was retrieved and returned to its owner who was very grateful because she carried her identity papers in it. The Brigade fluviale are the Paris River Police, whose creation dates from the Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in the city in 1900. They are the special rescue service for people who have fallen into the river Seine. They will also retrieve lost items that have accidentally been dropped into the river, and they will search for items where crime is involved with the disposal of evidence. They have the grim work of retrieving the bodies of people who have drowned. Port des Saints-Peres, 6e arrondissement, Left Bank, Paris, France, 1963.
