Les Halles on a winter's night. Two nuns are shopping selecting vegetables that are for sale at a retail stall set up in the roadway outside the Baltard pavilions. They are shopping in the chaotic scene with fruit and vegetable trucks loaded with crates, the brightly lit covered through road between pavilions stretching into the distance, and the lit up pavilion arches. The fresh produce had to be sold by 7 o'clock in the morning or else cleared away and removed by 8 o'clock by the authorities in order to allow the free circulation of traffic in the roads. But in the winter the time was extended by an hour to 9 o'clock. Le Carreau des Halles, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
