Place des Halles in the morning when the street market, or carreau forain, would shortly be ending for the day. A vegetable and herb seller is standing at her desk serving a woman customer. The carreau forain was highly organised where market gardeners and traders, many from different suburbs of Paris, would set up their pitch in a designated area according to what fresh produce they were selling. The Place des Halles was near the Baltard pavilions and the carreau forain extended down a number of streets and all had to be cleared to make way for traffic and the ordinary working day in Paris to begin. Vegetable sellers are serving their customers fresh produce picked only hours before and a choice of cafes open all hours are nearby, including L'Escargot d'Or - The Golden Snail - a rare restaurant specialising in snails. Carreau forain, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
