'Sylvanus' saw 'the wizard of the North' (1794-1871) working his string on Langton Wold about 1842: 'Some were walking in single file; others were undergoing the operation of rubbing after a sweat; all of which the intelligent chief of the establishment - seated on his hack - was superintending with eye and voice, ordering his forces about the field in the "preparation" they were undergoing, and personally prescribing the needful, discriminating treatment applied to each animal entrusted to his charge.' The History of Horse Racing by Roger Longrigg, page 151.
