After a racing career spectacular only in retrospect, Diomed went to stud at Up Park, Hampshire and then Barton, Suffolk. He got Grey Diomed, who went to Russia, and Young Giantess, dam of Eleanor. Otherwise he was largely a failure. It is impossible to say how, at the great age of 23, he suddenly became a prolific and prepotent sire of extraordinary merit.
