New mechanical refuse collectors devised to cope with the flat problem . Rapid increase in the number of flats in the London area has brought with it a special problem in their refuse collection and dispersal . To meet the demand , a new mechanical vertical type refuse bin carrier capable of dealing with six bins , each with a capacity of one quarter cubic yards , has been designed . The bins , which are specially designed for installation in flats , can be easily taken down and loaded by special mechanism on the carrier . Each pin hinged at the bottom to allow discharge at the refuse tip . A jack trolley is used to convey the bins to and from the conveyor . Photo shows , loading one of the bins from the Jack trolley to the special carrier works by hand operated mechanics . Each been competed individually . 7 October 1936
