Millions of tonnes of ice slowly breaking Niagara Falls bridge. Desperate attempts to save disaster. Millions of tonnes of ice piling more than 100 feet high against the structure threatened any minute to sweep away the 1,000 feet long View bridge, famous as the 'Honeymoon Bridge' at Niagara Falls. Thousands of people are watching each side of the Falls . As workmen defied death in their efforts to break the ice, which in one part, has forced its way through the bridge. Lower down the river, dynamite is being used to smash the ice in an effort to ease the strain on the bridge. If the bridges swept away, engineers fear that the valuable power plants will be totally destroyed. The powerhouse is completely flooded. Workmen are bracing the weakened girders with huge bulks of timber. Temperature. There is 15簞 above zero. Photo shows, the huge ice packs straining against the span of the Falls View Bridge. Note the twisted girders at base. 27 January 1938
