Attu, Aleutian Islands May 19, 1943 Looking northwest from atop the ridge between Holtz bay and Chicago Bay, this picture shows the complete Holtz bay area. In the foreground can be seen a japanese Zero airplane which had bee shot down or crashed early in the spring. To the front and slightly to the right of the plane men are unloading supplies from landing barges. On the first rise above the beach the Japanese had located a battery of six dual-purpose anti-aircraft and artillery guns. In this picture can be seen the general location of these guns. Ahead of these guns they had dug several long trenches for riflemen and machine guns. In the hill directly behind the gun emplacements were caves for the storing of ammunition and rations. On top of the second rise were other trenches and some caves for living quarters. Over the entire area can be seen dark spots which are craters from aircraft bombing and the shelling from the naval vessels both before the landing and after. In the third rise the Japanese had dug caves for living quarters andseveral conical tents had been located in the area
