1956 Winter Olympic Games - Cortina dmpezzo, Italy 13,000 people and 1,200 competitors gasped with surprise at the bearer of the Olympic torch fell over while skating into the stand during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games. The torch, a symbol of the highest amateur tradition was being carried in by Guido Catolli, as he skated round the rink on the last lap, he failed to notice a microphone wire laying on the ice and toppled over it. He kept a tight hold on the torch and finished the lap of honour before an ultra-silent audience. - Photo shows the Italian skater Guido Catolli ( Guido Caroli ) sitting on the ice after he had fallen over a wire laid on the skaters path. - 26 January 1956 - 固opFoto / AP
