Oscar Wilde , ( 1856 - 1900 ) Caricature by ' Ape ' from ' Vanity Fair ' , 1884 . He was an Irish poet , writer and playwright . He moved in fashionable and cultural social circles and was known for his biting wit and glittering conversation . He was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London . He was prosecuted and then imprisoned for homosexuality . His health suffered in prison and he died in 1900 .
