A one-inch cube of uranium that was part of the fuel of the world's first nuclear reactor was presented on 1st March 1963 to the Smithson Institution . Presentation was made by AEC Chairman , Glenn T Seaborg (left) at AEC HQ . The nuclear fuel enclosed in a plastic model of the reactor in which achieved the first sustained nucelar chain reaction , was accepted by Dr Leonard Carmichael , Secretary of the Smithsonian (right) .
