After being adrift in an open boat for eight days, six children and 40 other survivors of the evacuee liner City of Benares were found by patrolling Sunderland flying boat 600 miles from land. Food was dropped to them by parachute, and then warship was guided to the spot. The liner was torpedoed in the Atlantic on 10 September.
