Captain Alexander Kane, the British sea captain who has just been released from prison in Palma, Majorca, after serving six months imprisonment, visited the offices of the Officers (Merchant Navy) Federation in London before returning to his home in Ireland. Captain Kane, the master of the steamer "Brompton Manor", was arrested on a charge of assaulting a plainclothes policeman and was subsequently sentenced to 2 years 11 months and 11 days in prison. He appealed to the supreme court in Madrid, which confirmed the sentence but recommended a pardon. Finally his sentence was reduced to 6 months imprisonment.
