Demonstrations in London, more than 30 people including two women were reported arrested when squads of riots and mounted police, often in hand-to-hand struggle is breakup a series of demonstrations in the West End of London before and after a Mayday meeting in Trafalgar Square. Focal point of the demonstrations was the square which was jammed with people chanting "we want peace". At the end of the meeting demonstrators surged towards Downing Street, but they were cut off by the police called in and forced backwards to the square. 7 March 1950
