Mrs Violet White, of Southwark, London, arrived in Brighton today carrying a small brown paper parcel. She went to the Conservative party's conference, opened the parcel, held it up to the delegates and nearly in tears cried: "This is what they give the old age pensioner. Is this enough for housewives who are mothers, old-age pensioners, or women who stand before a washed-up all day?" The parcel contained one weeks rations for one person. Mrs White went on to criticise the government and was loudly cheered by the Conservative delegates. 3 October 1947
