The strictures of the British expedition which conquered Everest were taken at the Thyangboche Monastery in the Nepalese Himalayas as the party return after their stressful attempt on the 29,002 feet mountain, and reach London today (Saturday). Among the climbers feted by the monks were Edmund Percival Hillary, 33-year-old beekeeper from Auckland, New Zealand, and Sherpa Tensing Norkey Bhotia, 39-year-old Nepalese, who made the final assault on the peak in the morning of May 29 and became the first men ever to set foot on the summit. Hillary has been appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire; Tensing has been awarded the George Medal. Colonel John Hunt, leader of the expedition, also received a knighthood. Members of the expedition watch from a gallery of Thyangboche Monastery as lamas perform a devil dance in honour of their return from Everest. A specially shortened version of the dance was presented, for normally it goes on all day at a festival each February.
