Engelbert of Berg (1185 or 1186 to 1225); German archbishop revered as a saint by the Catholic Church. Born into a family of the German; was an ecclesiastical career started very young; and in 1217 was already consecrated archbishop of Cologne. In passionate defense of the law; the rights of individuals and religious institutions; often found himself at odds with the local nobility; died stabbed forty-seven times in an ambush; presumably at the hands of a group of nobles joined forces against him; as he was returning from a court hearing along with his cousin Frederick of Isenberg; who he had brought to court on charges of having defrauded the an abbey of nuns of Essen where he was bailiff. Having been killed for defending the sisters; he was declared a martyr by Cardinal Conrad of Urach. Anniversary on Nov. 7. Germany; circa 1900 engraving; Colorized version
