John Evans (c.1594-c.1659), Welsh astrologer. Evans was described as the 'ill-favoured astrologer of Wales'. Most of what is known about him comes from his pupil William Lilly. Evans was described variously as 'a great scholar', 'an excellent wise man', and a student of the black arts. Born in Wales, he had taken sacred orders, but fled from Staffordshire to London after a scandal. Lilly described him as having piercing judgement, but also being addicted to debauchery and abusive and quarrelsome. He understood Latin and Greek and was 'versed in the nature of the spirits'. This artwork (after John Bulfinch) is from 'Antiquarian Repertory' (1807).
