Ciliate protozoa. Polarised light micrograph of two suctorian ciliate protozoa (triangular) and a single heliozoan (round, right) protozoan. Suctoria obtain food through specialised suctorial tentacles that allow them to fasten themselves to their prey. While fully developed Suctoria do not have cilia, they are classified as ciliates because of the presence of cilia during the larval stage. Heliozoa have stiff arms (axopodia) radiating from their spherical bodies, which are used for capturing food, sensation, movement and attachment to substrates. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
