Lyme encephalopathy. Axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a 41-year-old man with Lyme encephalopathy. The scan shows white areas around the ventricles (centre) that are a sign of the chronic encephalomyelitis (brain and spinal cord inflammation) that occurs in this condition, a form of Lyme disease caused by Borrelia bacteria transmitted by tick bites. This MRI scan includes the use of gadolinium as a contrast medium.
