The Metropol Palace Hotel is the number one luxury hotel in Belgrade; Serbia. it is actually in Greek ownership and has been reconstructed 2006 to 2012 in most parts in its original style. The whole investment was 70 million Euro! The hotel has ten floors. In front of the hotel; the famous bronze statue of the "naked" (nymph) recalls the times of Tito. Initially; there were no plans for the Metropol Palace Hotel. From summer 1949 to November 1950; 15 youth brigades (18 000 brigadiers) guided by architect Djordje Ristic built a new seat for the central comitee of the national youith of Yugoslavia. But the building was totally oversized. So; in 1953; architect Dragi拧a Bra拧ovan (1887 - 1965); a representative of style of modernism; who also built the museum for Nicola Tesla; in 1932; succeeded in changing the building into the style of European modernism and to build up a luxury hotel. The two side wings were added; best material used. In 1957; opening took place. Immediately; the Metropol Palace Hotel became the centre of Belgrade society in the "block free" Yugoslavia. The conference of block free staes (1961) in this hotel became legendary; when 30 heads of states and 3000 guests attended. Even more famous became the New Year麓s parties of Josip Broz Tito at this place. Famous people stayed here: Nasser; Nehru; Jack Nicholson; Kirk Douglas; Sophie Loren; Gina Lollobrigida; Neil Armstrong; Louis Armstrong; Igor Stravinsky; Boris Spassky; Bobby Fischer; Alfred Hitchcock; Che Guevara. The last one stayed here in August; 1959; for two nights. As well; there is rumour; that also famous terrorist Carlos stayed here. But he was moved out by the Yugslavian secret service which controlled all rooms of the hotel. The renovation had to be realized due to a hotel fire in 2002 which happened in the two highest floors.
