Antiquity / HistoryThe Gallo-Roman villa of Montmaurin; circa 350.Located in the French commune of Montmaurin (department of Haute-Garonne); in Comminges and Midi-Pyrenees; this Gallo-Roman villa; archetypal of the Roman villa; is one of the largest villas in the Gaule Aquitaine. Its dimensions and its luxury illustrate the exceptional economic prosperity that experienced the South-West of Gaul between the 4th and the 5th century. Established during the Pax Romana; in the 1st century; its land covered an area of ??more than a thousand hectares. From the 4th century onwards; the master's residence was transformed into a palace extending over 5;800 square meters.
