Smithfield fruit and vegetable market. 19th-century illustration of the central London fruit and vegetable market that was erected as part of Smithfield Market in 1880 in the Smithfield area of London, UK. The architect was Horace Jones and the foundation stone was laid on 17 April 1880. Distinct from the famous meat market, this market was known as the General Market, and was one of several buildings damaged during the Second World War with only parts of the original building remaining. This illustration shows the intended plans, and does not show the final appearance of the building when finished. Published in 'The Builder' on 17 January 1880. Engraving by Benjamin Sly after an artwork by A. Berry.
