Richard I, Coeur de Lion, (1157-1199) landing at Sandwich, Kent, 14 March 1194. Richard, son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and second Angevin (Plantagenet) king of England, (1189-1199). On his way home from the Third Crusade (1189-1192) he was shipwrecked and began to make his way across Europe in disguise. He was recognised and held to ransom by Emperor Henry VI.
