Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris), a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee. One of only 4 surviving species of Sirenians (sea cows); severely endangered, probably fewer than 2000 survive due to habitat loss and boat collisions. A vegetarian, can reach 13 ft. in length and 3500 lbs. Found in both salt and fresh water, ranging from Virginia to Louisiana, but mostly in Florida coastal waters and rivers.
