This Dogday Harvestfly (Tibicen canicularis) has just emerged from it's nymph stage exoskeleton. Nymphs spend three years under ground where they feed on root juices, especially pine. They emerge from the ground in late summer at which time they molt and transform into winged adults. The loud mating call of the male sounds similar to an electric saw. This sound is produced by rubbing two membranes together, a process called stridulation. The Dogday Harvestfly can be found throughout northeastern North America.
