Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) feeding at El Rosario Sanctuary, Anganguao, Mexico. This migratory species is native to North and Central America, and northern South America. It has a wingspan of 9-10 cms and is capable of flying over 3000 kilometers in the course of two months. Some individuals have been seen in the UK having flown across the Atlantic Ocean (about 4500 kilometers). They normally travel to Mexico where they spend the winter in a state of semi-hibernation before mating in spring and returning north for summer.
