Clypeus of a Dogday Harvestfly (Tibicen canicularis). The Dogday Harvestfly can be found throughout northeastern North America. It spends its three year nymph stage under ground where it feeds on root juices, especially pine. The nymphs emerge from the ground in late summer at which time they molt and transform into winged adults. The loud mating call of the male sounds similar to an electric saw. This sound is produced by rubbing two membranes together, a process called stridulation.
