The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is 23 to 28 inches tall with a wingspan of almost 4 ft. It is a medium sized heron with a stocky body and short legs and neck. It has a black crown and back, gray wings and a white underside. Adults have red eyes and yellow legs and feet. The Black-Crowned Night Heron lives in both fresh and saltwater marshes, swamps, lakes, and wooded streams. This one was photographed in Reid Park in Tucson, Arizona.
