The Nicobar Pigeon (Caleonas nicobarica) also known as the "Hakled" or "Vulturine Pigeon" is one of the most beautiful of the pigeon species. They are rather thick set with a relatively small head, long legs, and long wings. The Nicobar is nomadic and is found in southeast Asia, particularly on the Nicobar Islands to New Guinea. The Nicobar Pigeon is considered a threatened species. Recent research on the Nicobar Pigeon at Oxford University using genetic samples has proven that it is the closest surviving relative to the Dodo. This individual was photographed at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona.
