Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) in non-breeding plumage. A stocky shorebird with orange legs. The bird's underpart is mainly rusty red in summer and brown in winter. The face and breast have conspicuous black markings that are duller in winter. Turnstones are named for their method of feeding, in which they walk along the beach, deftly overturning small stones and pebbles. They also dig holes in the sand, in pursuit of burrowing crustaceans. La Jolla Coastline, CA.
