After the White-tailed bucks (Odocoileus virginianus) antlers are fully grown the velvet covering starts to die and peel off. The buck aids this peeling by rubbing its antlers against trees and shrubs. This occurs mostly in September and by the end of the month most of the velvet is off. Another fall behavior practiced by White-tailed bucks is called scraping. This is where the animal paws the earth, creating a visible depression of from 1 to 2 1/2 feet in diameter. They may defecate, urinate, and sometimes put a hoof print in the scrape. Scrapes tend to be clustered in open areas clear of underbrush, often beneath an overhanging limb that the deer already has rubbed its head against. The majority of scrapes are made by males, and most are made during the peak of the mating period.
