Adult female Mandrill (Papio sphinx, Mandrillus sphinx) grooming adult male. Breeding males have more intense coloration on the face and rump. The male's face has deeply grooved stripes: a red central stripe flanked by blue stripes on either side. The male's rump is hairless and the area around the anus is bright red and the calluses are pink and violet. The female Mandrill is less colorful, lacking the red facial stripe and a smaller bluish area. Both have short tails. "Mandrill" means "man-like animal". It is also known as 'The Devil of the Fang', so named by the local Fang people. Endangered species. Range: Central West Africa. Jacksonville Zoo, Florida.
