Swampfish, Chologaster cornuta. This small (2 1/2 inches) nocturnal fish, although not rare within its range is little known and extremely secretive. It is native to the Atlantic Coastal Plain of southeastern US from VA to GA where it inhabits heavily vegetated swamps, sloughs and backwaters with plenty of bottom cover. Their breeding behavior is a bit unusual, with the rather large eggs being carried in the female's gill chambers until they hatch. Swampfish are in the family Amblyopsidae which also includes several species of blind cavefishes.
