The Black Turnstone (Arenaria melanocephala) is a medium-sized sandpiper with scaled black underparts, white spot between eye and bill, black brest with white speckles on sides, and white belly. A short, dark bill is slightly upturned. The winter plumage is duller and lacks the white on the face. Turnstones are named for their method of feeding, in which they walk along the beach, deftly overturning small stones and pebbles. They also dig holes in the sand, in pursuit of burrowing crustaceans. Monterey Coastline, Monterey, Ca.
