The abandoned exoskeletal molting of a Dogday Harvestfly nymph (Tibicen canicularis). The Dogday Harvestfly or Cicada can be found throughout northeastern North America. It spends its three-year nymph stage under ground where it feeds on root juices, especially pine. The nymphs emerge from the ground in late summer at which time they molt and transform into winged adults. The loud mating call of the male sounds similar to an electric saw.
