Unmarked Slender Mosquito, (Culiseta inornata). The male drinks plant juices and the female takes blood from birds and mammals, especially cattle and rabbits. The females have a long proboscis adapted for piercing skin in order to feed on blood. This mosquito's larvae feed on microscopic algae and bacteria. It's eggs are deposited on the surface film of water in sunny locations in spring. The larvae hatch in a few days, feed, pupate, and emerge in 3-5 weeks. Adults are abundant in the spring and fall, seeking shelter in dry weather. Females sometimes bite people at dusk or dawn but usually are much less aggressive than other mosquitoes.
