A female smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) protecting her eggs located in a nest in the rocks below her. The female will actively protect her nest from all other fish. The eggs are a tempting target of attacks from bluegills and sunfish. Photographed in New York State. This fish has been widely introduced to freshwater lakes and streams for sport fishing.
